Recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusivity, Milliman took a proactive step by establishing the Milliman Opportunity Scholarship program. This program aims to empower students from historically under-represented ethnic groups to pursue their studies in crucial fields such as actuarial science, data science, computer science, economics, and programming. To ensure the effective administration of the scholarship program, Milliman has partnered with Scholarship America®, the largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals within the USA.
Fields Covered
Milliman is pleased to announce its Scholarship programme for the 2024 academic year, and encourages students to submit their applications. This prestigious opportunity is available to students hailing from South Africa, as well as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia. The scholarship is specifically designed for undergraduate students pursuing studies in any of the following fields of specialization:
- Actuarial Science
- Computer Science
- Data Analytics
- Economics
- Finance
- Mathematics
- Data Science
- Programming
- Statistics
- The scholarship will cover studies for the 2024 academic year for students from South Africa or Australia, and will cover studies for the 2023-2024 academic year for students from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Ireland.
Coverage value and selection
Milliman will generously grant scholarships to a range of 15 to 25 students, ensuring each recipient receives a minimum of USD 5,000 (equivalent to over R90,000). It is important to note that students are required to reapply for funding on an annual basis. Aspiring applicants should carefully consider the following selection criteria:
- All applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship America evaluation team.
- Scholarship America will select finalists based on: candidates’ academic records and responses to 3 essay questions.
- Milliman Inc. will select recipients from the group of finalists. The following may be taken into consideration: demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, and financial need as stated in the application.
- Preference will be given to previous scholarship recipients.
- Applicants will be notified of their outcome towards the end of June 2023.
- Scholarship America will process payments on behalf of Milliman – payments will be issued to the institution in August 2023. Students outside the United States and Canada will receive funds via wire transfer.
- Scholars and institutions must be eligible to receive funds from the United States per the Office of Foreign Assets Control, United States Department of the Treasury.
Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must belong to one of these qualified ethnic minority groups:
- South African citizens: must have at least 1 birth parent who is Black or Coloured
- United States and Canada citizens: must have at least 1 birth parent who is of African descent, Latino/ Hispanic, Native North American, or Pacific Islander
- United Kingdom and Ireland citizens: must have at least 1 birth parent who is Black African, Black Caribbean, Irish Traveller or Gypsy
- Australian citizens: must have at least 1 birth parent who is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- You must reside in and attend a university in one of these countries: South Africa, Australia, the United States, Canada, Ireland or the United Kingdom
- You must be in your final year of high school (Matric or high school senior) OR pursuing undergraduate studies (technical or university-level)
- You must have a strong academic record
- You must be studying or intend on studying at an accredited college or university in one of the countries listed above
- You must intend on pursuing full-time undergraduate studies within one of the fields listed above

South African Road Federation (SARF) Bursary 2024
The South African Road Federation invites all eligible applicants who wish to continue their education to apply for financial support in the form of scholarships. The grant of funds will consider subjects that are fundamental to the road transportation sector, including:
- Road Engineering (Traffic engineering, Transportation planning, Pavement engineering, Bridge Engineering, Construction Materials, Stormwater, Environment and Construction management),
- Road Transport Management
- Road Transport Economics and Road Traffic Management (Traffic Policing and Accident Investigation).
The eligible academic authority at the institution where the applicant wishes to study must approve all applications.
The amount of the bursary will depend on the applicant’s needs and the Federation Council’s judgment. Although it won’t be enough to pay for everything, it is meant to enhance the student’s existing resources. On the bursar’s behalf, it will be paid directly to the concerned academic institution.
After completing their studies, applicants must demonstrate to Council that they will be working in a setting consistent with the South African road transport business.
About South African Road Federation
The South African Road Federation (SARF), an organization that was established in 1950, serves as a focal point for persons interested in the country’s roads and the local road industry in South Africa.
The South African Road Federation (SARF) is an organization whose mission is to advance the South African road industry by information dissemination, the support of sensible legislation, and through education and training. SARF works to promote economic growth in the industry through education and training, with a primary goal of encouraging the continuous development of effective and efficient road networks in South Africa.
Bursars will be expected to:
- Enroll as an associate (i.e. individual) members of the SARF (approximate annual subscription: R445)
- Submit six-monthly reports of your study progress
- If you are enrolled for postgraduate studies thesis covering the research results, academic content or similar for publication in the Federation’s newsletter or other publication, within a reasonable time after completion of the course of study.
- Be prepared to make a presentation to your local branch of the Federation of the subject of your study on a mutually convenient occasion.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the The South African Road Federation programme are:
- South African citizens are preferred but applicants from SADC countries may also apply
- Applicants studying full-time or enrolled towards a road transport industry-related degrees at an accredited South African University or the University of Technology.
- Advance levels such as M.Sc., M. Tech. or above will be given preference, however, undergraduate degrees may also be considered.
- Employees/members of SARF will be given preference

The objective of the bursary program is to close the divide between high school and the job market. Hollywoodbets aims to support the young individuals of South Africa by financing their studies, thereby enhancing their chances of securing employment. The bursary program offers financial assistance that may fully or partially cover study-related expenses. The extent of coverage will be determined by the candidate’s chosen field of study and academic achievements.
Funding will be granted for one year of study at a time, and students have the opportunity to reapply for support annually. As part of the selection process, shortlisted candidates will be required to complete assessments and attend interviews before the final candidates are chosen.
Requirements
Applicants are required to meet the following minimum entry criteria prior to submitting their application (it is important to note that if any of the requirements are not met, your application will not be considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
You must have completed Matric or be currently in Matric - You must be studying or intend on studying toward a qualification in one of the fields listed above, in 2024
- You must be studying or intend on studying towards a qualification that is 12 months or longer
- You must be studying or intend on studying at a tertiary institution that is registered with the DHET in South Africa
- You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in Matric, if currently in Matric
- You must have achieved a minimum result of 65% per subject in Matric, if currently in Matric
- You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60% at the tertiary level, if currently at the tertiary level Preference will be given to students who reside close to the tertiary institution they have applied to study at
